Jan Vranken is a sociologist and an Emeritus Professor at Antwerp University (Belgium) where he founded the research centre OASeS. His research is on poverty & social exclusion and urban problems, at present as an expert (CASUM). He coordinated numerous projects on these and related topics (illiteracy, homelessness, ethnic minorities, social economy); among them several European ones such as UGIS (FP5) and FACIT (FP7). He has edited 20 Flemish Yearbooks on Poverty and Social Exclusion and has co-edited three federal Yearbooks Poverty in Belgium. He participated in two COST-actions on urban matters (CIVITAS and City Regions). In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious national Franqui Chair by the Université Catholique de Louvain.


David Hulchanski is a Professor of Housing and Community Development at the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, where he holds an endowed Chair in Housing. He was Director of the Centre for Urban and Community Studies from 2000 to 2008. His MSc(Pl) (1975) and PhD (1981) are in urban planning. His research and teaching is focused on neighbourhoods, community development, housing need, immigrant settlement and social and economic rights. He is currently the principal investigator of a seven-year $2.5 million study of socio-spatial inequality, diversity and change in Canadian metropolitan areas with international comparisons funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
